Shadowsocks Android Client worked well

I downloaded the Shadowsocks Android APK for my phone. The installation was straightforward, just like any other APK. I configured it with my own server settings, and it connected without issues. I used it mostly for browsing and streaming, and the speeds were consistent. It handled switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data pretty smoothly too. I didn't need to contact support, so can't comment there, but the client itself is stable.

Good for bypassing geo-blocks

I've been using the Shadowsocks-libev Client for Windows for a few weeks now. It's generally good for bypassing geo-restrictions, which was my main goal. The setup was a little more involved than I expected, took some reading online to get it right. Once configured, it's pretty reliable. The connection sometimes drops briefly, maybe once a day, but it reconnects quickly. Performance is decent for general browsing. It's a solid tool, but the initial configuration could be more user-friendly for new users.

Simple Windows Client

I grabbed the Shadowsocks Windows Client. It was easy to download and set up. Got it running with my server quickly. It just works, no fuss. Good speeds too.

Anyone know if Shadowsocks is better than OpenVPN for getting around internet restrictions? Like, faster or more reliable?

A Andre 2 months ago
From my experience, Shadowsocks usually feels way faster than OpenVPN for bypassing stuff, especially for streaming. Less overhead I think.

It depends. OpenVPN is super secure, but Shadowsocks is designed more for obfuscation and speed against censorship. If bypassing blocks is your main goal, SS often wins.

Hey, I'm thinking of trying Shadowsocks. Is it actually free to use, or are there hidden costs later on?

S Sarah 1 month ago
Yeah, the software itself is totally free and open source. You can download the clients and servers for nothing.

It's free for the software, but you might end up paying for a server if you can't find a good free one or want better speeds/reliability. Lots of people just use community-run ones though.

I keep seeing talk about 'Shadowsocks-rust' or 'Shadowsocks-go.' What's the difference between all these versions, and which one should I use on my Mac?

N Noor 2 months ago
They're basically different implementations of the same protocol, written in different programming languages. For a Mac, you'd probably just want the regular macOS client, doesn't really matter which specific backend it uses unless you're a developer.

Yeah, they're just different versions, kinda like different car models from the same company. For an end-user, the official macOS client from their site or GitHub is usually the easiest. Performance differences are usually minimal for most people.

Just curious, is there a way to get a trial account or something before committing to setting up a server?

R Rosa Q. 1 month ago
There's no 'account' system really since it's open source software. You just download and configure. If you want to test, you'd look for a free community server or a third-party provider offering a trial.

Nah, it's not like a service you subscribe to. You can just download the client and try to find a free server node out there to connect to. Plenty of those around for testing.

Is it possible to use any coupons or promo codes for Shadowsocks? Looking to save some cash if I can.

S Sarah 2 months ago
Shadowsocks itself doesn't have coupons or promo codes since it's free software. If you're paying for a third-party server, that provider might have their own deals, but not for the actual Shadowsocks project.

Nah, no coupons for Shadowsocks. It's an open-source project, not a commercial service. Your best 'deal' is finding a good free community server or setting up your own on a cheap VPS.

I heard Shadowsocks is open source. Does that mean it's regularly updated and safe from vulnerabilities?

N Nina 1 month ago
Being open source generally means a lot of eyes are on the code, which helps with security. They do push updates pretty regularly, yes.

F Faith 1 month ago
For sure, the open-source nature means the community can audit it. That's a good thing for finding and fixing bugs or security issues quicker than closed-source stuff. Plus, you know exactly what's running.

I'm looking for a good client for my Android phone. Any recommendations for the best Shadowsocks app?

P Paula 2 months ago
The official Android APK from their site usually works great. Simple and effective.

D Derek Hughes 2 months ago
I've used a few, but honestly, the main Shadowsocks client from their GitHub is usually the most stable. Just make sure you get it from a reputable source.
